The Global Climate Adaptation Partnership (GCAP) holds an annual training programme, the Adaptation Academy Foundation Course, focused on professional skill development centred on practical climate change adaptation issues.
GCAP
partners with the University of Reading, University of Cape Town, SysTem for
Analysis, Research and Training (START) and UK Met Office (linking to their
online training programme) to deliver the Adaptation Academy. In the past two
years, successful Courses were hosted in Cape Town, South Africa at the
University of Cape Town. For 2012, we will host the third Foundation Course at
the Oxford University Department of Continuing Education (Rewley House) in the
United Kingdom.
Since its inception, the Foundation Course has been a great success. Each year we rework and enhance the course based on feedback from the previous year and changes in industry best practices. The Oxford Foundation Course will build on our experience from previous years but will have a greater focus on Europe and connecting best practices from developing and developed countries. Similar to previous Foundation Courses, the Oxford Foundation Course is developed to be flexible in its training modules in order to accommodate participants’ unique learning needs and objectives.

The Course will be three weeks long from the 13 to the 31 August 2012 and will focus on practical issues facing professionals working in the CCA and DRR fields. GCAP understands that there are many overlaps and synergies between the two fields, and aims to bring professionals together to develop skills and share experiences with fellow participants and international experts. The Adaptation Academy is dedicated to facilitating strong learning environments where participants explore different approaches and ways of thinking in order to address some of the major issues they experience in their work. GCAP believes in the importance of mentoring, both internally and externally, and all of the teachers and experts at the Adaptation Academy are dedicated to assisting and mentoring the participants.
The Foundation Course takes a professional approach to training and consequently, only addresses relevant issues that are directly applicable to the participant’s work. The Course will be taught by leading CCA and DRR experts, balancing seminar-style teaching with hands-on learning, and aims to provide an overview of the latest relevant science and professional experiences, including local, regional and sector specific case studies.
The course is designed around building practical skills for project development where by the end of the three weeks, participants create and present a project that incorporates the learning they have done throughout the course. This allows participants to bring all of their learning together and produce a tangible product. Project design and development is a very important skill to have and it also serves as a good tool for bringing together different components in a logical sequence.
If participants come as a team, they can
bring a current project or programme directly from work and further develop
their project throughout the Course with guidance and support from international experts. By the end of the
three weeks, they will have a deliverable to present back to their
organisation. Additionally, we can further focus their learning on more sector
specific areas and skills, and help them develop actual project work.
